Stochastic
particle-tracking techniques are effective for
simulating strong convection (which is difficult to
model by direct numerical solution of the governing
equations). In porous media, this situation occurs
during high-Peclet
number heat and mass transport and during certain high-Damkohler-number
reactive flows.
The graphics shown above illustrate steady dissolution of a sphere in a heterogeneous medium at
increasing Peclet number. These simulations were used to better
understand the functionality of Sh versus Pe equations for packed
beds.
